The Challenge

The Booker Prize required a production partner capable of delivering a seamless live broadcast while capturing the atmosphere and prestige of one of the literary world’s most significant events.

Hosted at London’s Roundhouse and broadcast to BBC audiences, the production demanded flawless execution, extensive planning and the ability to adapt to live circumstances as they unfolded.

With no margin for error, the team needed to capture key moments across the evening while remaining ready for evolving schedules, contributor movements and live event requirements. Particular attention was given to the winner announcement, ensuring coverage plans were carefully designed to capture the moment naturally while maintaining the integrity and excitement of the reveal.

Our Approach

Preference Studio was responsible for the planning, technical design and delivery of the complete production workflow.

Working directly with The Booker Prize Foundation and alongside BBC stakeholders during planning and recce stages, we developed a broadcast solution capable of delivering a reliable programme feed while also supporting wider content requirements.

The team managed production logistics, technical planning, camera deployment, crew coordination, graphics integration, VT playback and live transmission.

Production Setup

A six-camera production was deployed across the venue, combining fixed positions with roaming coverage to capture both the ceremony itself and the wider atmosphere throughout the Roundhouse.

The production included:

  • Six-camera live production

  • Roaming event coverage

  • Live vision mixing

  • Graphics integration

  • VT playback

  • ISO recording

  • Direct delivery to the BBC outside broadcast truck

  • 12-person production crew

This setup allowed the team to create dynamic coverage while maintaining the reliability expected of a broadcast-critical production.

Beyond The Broadcast

Alongside the live programme, Preference Studio delivered rapid-turnaround edits throughout the evening.

Key moments were clipped, edited and distributed while the event was still taking place, allowing stakeholders to review and approve content in near real time.

This additional workflow ensured the event generated immediate content value while extending the reach of the production beyond the live broadcast itself.

Results

The production successfully delivered a broadcast-quality programme feed for BBC transmission while simultaneously generating event content for immediate use.

By combining live production expertise with fast-turnaround content workflows, Preference Studio helped The Booker Prize Foundation maximise the value of a single live event across both broadcast and digital channels.
